What moves the price

  • Feet of wall. Drain tile is priced mostly by the foot, so one wall costs far less than four.
  • Finished space. Lower levels with drywall, carpet and built-ins cost more to open up and put back.
  • Inside or outside. Fixing grading and downspouts is usually far cheaper than any interior system.
  • Structural work. Bowing or horizontally cracked walls need reinforcement, which costs more than sealing.
  • The sump setup. A new basin, discharge line or backup adds cost but prevents the most common failure.

Comparing quotes

Ask each contractor for the feet of drain tile, the pump model, whether a backup is included, what happens to finished walls and what the warranty covers. Our list of questions to ask before you sign helps.

Questions

Why are two quotes so different?

They may cover different amounts of wall, different pumps or different cleanup. Line the scopes up side by side before comparing prices.

Is it worth fixing the yard first?

Often, yes. If water only appears during rain, grading and downspouts can solve it for a fraction of an interior system.

Will insurance pay for waterproofing?

Usually not. Policies may cover sudden damage, but seepage and waterproofing are generally treated as maintenance. Ask your agent about sump backup coverage.
